An Australian running a guesthouse in Ecuador says Wikileaks founder Julian 
Assange would be a more-than-welcome guest in the country.

Assange sought asylum overnight at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, with 
Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino saying later that the government was 
considering the request of the 40-year-old Australian.

Doug Greenshields, who has been running a guest house in Ecuador for 
five-and-a-half years, said it was a smart political move by the Wikileaks 
chief.

"I guess he's betting that if he gets over here they would be unlikely to hand 
him over to the US," Mr Greenshields said.

"Anybody that could be seen to be standing up to the US would be more than 
welcome here."

Assange will remain at the embassy while his application is considered.

Last week, Britain's Supreme Court rejected Assange's request to reopen an 
appeal against an extradition order to Sweden.

A Swedish prosecutor wants to question him over allegations he sexually 
assaulted two women in August 2010.

His supporters say the charges are politically motivated and fear he could be 
extradited to the US to face charges ov
