Subject: HOME ALONE campaign: together we made the difference again!
It's official: HOME ALONE campaign has been successful!
United Nations officially announced that after ratification of
Domestic Workers Conventions by two countries - Uruguay and Philippines - the
International Labour Organization's (ILO) 189 Domestic Work Convention will
come into legal force.
The C189 Domestic Work Convention sets out the employment rights of
domestic workers and recognises that they deserve the same rights as any other
worker.
Under new law domestic workers are entitled to protections such as weekly
days off, limits to hours of work, minimum wage and social security coverage.
The convention also obliges governments to protect domestic workers from
violence and abuse, and to prevent child labour in domestic work.
Working behind closed doors and invisible to society, lacking
sufficient legal protections, domestic workers are among the most exploited and
abused workers in the world. Many are in slavery.
That's why the Convention is a great milestone in our fight for
better working conditions for millions of domestic workers around the world and
we are very happy that three years of relentless campaigning finally paid off.
It wouldn't be possible without the help of all our supporters and we
would like to thank you for that.
We are now working to make sure the Convention is implemented, starting
in the UK where the government removed the migrant domestic workers visa
arrangements pushing them back towards slavery. Under new arrangements migrant
domestic workers cannot change their employers even if they find themselves in
an abusive situation.
