Editorial: SBY Draws Nation’s Gaze to NTT in Need
October 20, 201

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s visit to East Nusa Tenggara could be the
start of a new push east for Indonesia, an undertaking that has long been
coming.

One of the poorest regions in the country, the province known as NTT
desperately needs investment and progress. It needs new infrastructure,
schools, hospitals, factories and most importantly, entrepreneurs and
well-paying jobs.

The president’s trip to Flores for the centennial celebration of the Catholic
Church in Ruteng, Manggarai district, will go a long way toward fostering
tolerance and closer ties among the country’s diverse ethnic communities. That
in itself should be applauded, as it will strengthen the social bonds that hold
this country together.

But as Christian Rotok, the district head of Manggarai, said at the centennial
festivities, the president’s visit brings greater attention to the region and,
over time, will hopefully promote economic development.

NTT is rich in mineral resources such as iron ore, gold, copper, tin and coal,
but it is developmentally poor. It has some of the most beautiful areas in the
archipelago, but with little infrastructure, these areas remain undeveloped.

The province is in dire need of agriculture-related infrastructure including
roads, bridges and irrigation facilities, as well as assistance in farming,
fishing and livestock raising. The government can take the lead in pushing
development through greater disbursement of funds, but it is critical that the
private sector be the main driver of growth.

It is important that the right environment be created in NTT, one that fosters
entrepreneurship and empowers the private sector. It is important that the
region’s youth are provided jobs and the prospect of a brighter future. The
realization of these things would be the best legacy of the president’s visit.
