Abraham Samad, chairman of Indonesia’s antigraft body, admitted Wednesday that
Vice President Boediono is involved in the Bank Century bailout scandal.

“The role of Vice President Boediono can be seen through the FPJP [short-term
loan facility],” Abraham said in a press conference at the Corruption
Eradication Commission (KPK) office on Wednesday.

He added that as the governor of Bank Indonesia at the time of bailout,
Boediono understood and knew about the FPJP.

However, Abraham noted that the details of his involvement would be made more
clear after questioning Budi Mulya and Siti Chalimah Fadjrijah, two recent
suspects in the case who were formerly officials at the central bank.

“After interrogating B.M. and S.F., it will be decided,” he said. “By God’s
will, the KPK will never be afraid to question people. The KPK only fears God.”

The House of Representatives previously voted that the decision to save Bank
Century by injecting Rp 6.7 trillion into it was illegal. Lawmakers blamed
former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Boediono for allowing the
funds to go through, and some members of the House have planned to use their
legislative right to express an opinion as a way to impeach the vice president.

A spokesman for the vice president, Yopie Hidayat, said that Boediono firmly
believed the decision to bail out the bank was necessary to save the country
from joining the global financial turmoil of 2008.

“Indonesians are enjoying the benefits of the policy that the vice president
undertook, as Indonesia has been minimally effected by the financial crisis,”
Yopie said. "Meanwhile, there are many other countries still suffering heavy
burdens."

“The policy has been proven to be wise, and Boediono is ready to [accept]
responsibility for his decision,” Yopie said on Tuesday.
