Three police officers were shot dead on Thursday, after a suspected terrorist
group attacked them while they were patrolling a village in the Central
Sulawesi district of Poso.

The three officers were identified as First Brig. Wayan, First Brig. Ruslan and
First Brig. Narto. They were all members of the police’s mobile brigade
(Brimob) unit assigned to hunt down terrorist groups in Poso.

“There was gunfire between Central Sulawesi Police’s Brimob with an unknown
group. It took place between Tambarana village and Mount Kalora in Poso
Pesisir, at 10 a.m.,” National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said in
Jakarta on Thursday.

The spokesman said three more officers were injured in the shooting and had
been taken to Paringgi Hospital in Poso.

Agus said one attacker was arrested but the rest of the group escaped. Police
are currently hunting them down.

Security intensified in Poso after two policemen were found dead in Poso in
October after they were investigating an alleged terrorist camp linked to the
hardline Islamist organization Jamaah Anshoru Tauhid (JAT), which has denied
the accusation.

Poso was the site of sectarian violence between Muslims and Christians between
the late 1990s and mid-2000s that left thousands dead.
