Yudhoyono to Tour Three African Nations, Saudi Arabia
Jakarta Globe | January 28, 2013

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to tour three African countries
and Saudi Arabia starting on Wednesday, where he will attend two international
conferences, as well as reportedly discuss migrant worker issues and a slate of
other bilateral matters.

The president is scheduled to kick off his nine-day tour with a visit to
Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, to attend a UN High Level Panel of Eminent
Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, which is a follow-up to two
similar meetings in New York in September and London in November of last year.

“The Indonesian president will attend the Monrovia [meeting] in his capacity as
one of the co-chairs of the [panel] … to ensure that the Post-2015 Development
Agenda deliberations run as expected,” Indonesian presidential spokesman Teuku
Faizasyah said in a press statement on Monday.

“Among targets wished to achieve is poverty eradication through sustainable
growth with equity,” he added.

Yudhoyono is also set to engage in a bilateral meeting with his Liberian
counterpart, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as they seek to boost bilateral ties
between Indonesia and Liberia, particularly in terms of trade and investment.

He will then depart to Abuja, Nigeria, to meet with his Nigerian counterpart
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to discuss bilateral issues, with a similar focus on
trade and investment, as well as politics, security and socio-cultural matters.

Yudhoyono will then head to Jeddah to attend a business forum set to feature
both Indonesian and Saudi businesses. He will also perform a minor hajj with
his wife, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, while there.

Faizasyah’s statement mentioned nothing about any discussions surrounding
Indonesian migrant workers, but the Saudi Arabian daily Okaz reported on Sunday
that Yudhoyono was expected to sign an agreement to end a freeze on the
recruitment of Indonesian maids that has been in place since early 2011. That
ban followed an Indonesian maid’s beheading after she was convicted of
murdering her Saudi employer.

Okaz reported that the two sides had reached a deal after tough negotiations
over the past year about maids’ salaries and treatment, along with other
conditions set by Indonesia. Saudi Arabia has reportedly agreed to pay
Indonesian maids a monthly salary of between 1,200 and 1,500 Saudi riyals ($320
and $400).

The report gave no further details of the agreement.

Yudhoyono is scheduled to end his tour with a visit to Cairo to attend the 12th
Summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), themed “The Muslim
World: New Challenges and Expanding Opportunities.”

He is expected to arrive back in Indonesia on Feb. 7.
