Constructed within just 11 months at Fidel’s initiative, the center
consists of two teaching blocks with classrooms for kindergarten through sixth
grade, a library and computer laboratory, with a total capacity for 140
students.

The educational center, inaugurated a few days after the commemoration of
the 83rd birthday of the revolutionary heroine Vilma Espín, also has a day
center for 34 infants, sports areas and a medical clinic.

The teaching staff of 31 includes a doctor in educational psychology.

During the opening event, Fidel emphasized the effort and dedication of
construction workers, who had unconditional support throughout the process from
military and civilian workers from the Department of Personal Security.

Given persistent rain, the activity was moved to the center’s interior,
where the leader of the Revolution conversed for two hours with children,
teachers, construction workers and people from the neighborhood.

He commented on significant international issues, including climate
change, weapons of mass destruction, the economic crisis and high fuel prices,
commenting that, in these circumstances, life on planet Earth is difficult.

Fidel also referred to national food production and the need to diversify
crops in order to increase production. He outlined the characteristics of the
Vilma Espín Guillois school, inaugurated in the year of the commemoration of
the 160th anniversary of the birth of José Martí, Cuba’s National Hero; the
60th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Carlos de Céspedes garrisons
and the 55th anniversary of the April 9 General Strike.

Present at the activity were Comandante de la Revolución Ramiro Valdés
Menéndez, Army Corps General Abelardo Colomé Ibarra, and Mercedes López Acea,
First Secretary of the Communist Party in Havana.

New Trova musicians Eduardo Sosa and Pepe Ordaz performed at the event,
together with the Moncada group, whose "Chamamé a Cuba" was chorused by
everyone in attendance.

Before concluding, Fidel invited those present to listen to "El regreso
de un amigo," a song from a group of eminent Cuban artists dedicated to
Comandante of the Bolivarian Revolution Hugo Chávez.
