For your 20s

Keep your focus on establishing a positive work record. The early 20s are
the years when you have just stepped out of your university and into the
workforce. And questions like 'What is my longterm goal?', 'Am I in the
right career field?', 'Is all this even worth it?' must not bother you
whatsoever.

All these doubts need not be your prime concern, at least at such an early
stage.

Think of yourself like a kid who needs to be open to various options and be
flexible to new ideas. What you need to focus on is learning as much as
possible. Expose yourself to different styles of working, gain from your
senior's experience and acclimatise yourself to the working styles of
different organisations.

Keep your options open and build useful contacts along the career path — you
will need them in the future.

Bear in mind that a positive work record when you are in the initial stages
of your career will always keep you in good stead for the rest of your life.
Your seniors will vouch for you even when you move on and don't work for
them any longer. Trying to find out where you ought to be 10 years down the
line can wait for a while.

Such decisions are not taken impulsively. Right now, building a reputation
of someone who's hard working and flexible and willing to learn is far more
important.

For your 30s

For most people, the 30s represents the shift from the mass worker clan to
the much sought after first level leadership position, the time when you
must pay attention to becoming a leader. It typically represents one's shift
to the first level managerial position or maybe an assistant level leader
that places you somewhere in between the long hierarchy of the company.
However , such a shift requires a massive change in the mindset as well.

Out here, the competition gets even more intense . At this stage of your
career, one must focus on displaying leadership qualities and be a lot more
focussed towards specific goals. The key is to make sure you get recognized
for all your work. Carefully document all your achievements and have them
ready for important meetings with the management.

Display leadership qualities and pay attention to taking your team along. At
this stage of their career, many professionals tend to take it easy and
become self-obsessed with their senior position. But you must remember ,
reaching seniority is easy, commanding respect at that position is equally
difficult.

For your 40s

Don't forget that this is the time that shows some serious midlife crises
for many people and they often start questioning their life, their journey
till date and their achievements as well.

Here's when you sit back and re-examine what success means to you at this
stage of life. While some already start setting their eye on the next level
of success (like a better managerial position or a new business venture),
there are also some who get disillusioned by what they have and hence,
contemplate a change of career path and priorities.

This is the point where you assess your requirements and try to understand
where you want to take the rest half of your life.

Do you want to reach a new level of earning potential? Do you want to take
it easy and get back to dong things that you left midway? Do you want to
spend more time with your family and friends? Re-examine your definition of
success and act accordingly.

For your 50s

At this stage, plan for the years ahead because that's when you will be
close to retirement. If possible, set up a tentative schedule for yourself
because these are the years when people suddenly have more time than ever on
their hand. If the present job is getting too stressful to handle, you may
also opt for an alternative career.

An important aspect is to be aware of your financial savings and investments
to gear up for any unforeseen circumstances.
