My colleague asked me an interesting question the other day. "What should be the ideal brightness of the computer monitor?Now, this may look simple to you. But there's more than meets the eye. Explains Dr Mahipal Sachdev, chairman & medical director, Centre for Sight, New Delhi "Your eyes are designed primarily for use at distance. So spending long hours looking at a computer screen can be very demanding for your eyes. Your eyes must focus and refocus on the images to keep them sharp, which can cause undue stress to your eye muscles. It's important to note that near work by your eyes induces myopia." In fact, when you work on computer, your eyes blink at less than half their normal rate, which can cause a dry, irritated eyes. "Conditions in your workplace such as excessive reflections off your computer display, poor lighting, improper placement of equipment and old monitors may also contribute to the problem," he adds. Don't turn a blind eye to this. On an average, more than 50% of the workforce today uses a computer on the job — and nearly 60 million people experience computer vision problems. On a serious note, worldwide, approximately 314 million people suffer from serious vision impairment. Of these, 45 million people are blind and 124 million have low vision.
