Installing XC16 v1.25 solved the problem :)

FWIW i'm on windows 10 and manually merging the two hex-files (bootloader 
and applayerv1). yes i did remove the :00000001FF in the first file. Anyway 
the hex-file-format from XC16 v1.25 is not identical to v1.26.
