I use the gentoo ebuilds of ion and of mplayer, but since it's not an mplayer only problem, I doubt, it has something to do with the mplayer ebuilds. And the ion ebuilds also don't patch ion in any way, so I don't think it has something to do with the packaging. I use xorg version 6.8.2 and also temporarily removed the ~/.ion3/ folder but it didn't help. -- Martin Stubenschrott <stubenschrott (at) gmx (dot) net>
