I don't use Alt by default, I use "Mod1", which is not always Alt. On Suns it is often the diamond keys, and on them there's no conflict between Ion's bindings and apps that go through the trouble of finding what modifier Alt is mapped to, if any. In any case, in my experience, Mod1 can be always expected to be mapped to something sane, but the same can not be said of the other modifiers, and actually trying to find the modifier for some other key than Alt would seem even more problematic to do portably and still have some working modifier. -- Tuomo
