statusbar disable?

I'm using the debian stable (sarge) version of ion3 (20050502)
and I have two problems.  One is that the font for the menu
and for the statusbar is some hideous blocky thing designed
for very low resolution by the looks of it.   Two, I actually don't
want the statusbar at the bottom.  Is there a way to remove it?
