What do you mean by bloated gnome protocol? I don't know either the gnome or the
kde protocol for this but I thought that their applets always needed their
respective panels (kicker in kde IIRC)... Do you mean that you can run kde
applets without kicker?

Well, for the record I've been using the gnome-panel on the %systray (using ion
from darcs with the winprop) and before I used it on the dock. All gnome applets
that I know of work with gnome-panel to "dock" themselves. This %systray idea is
really great btw.
