"creating region with negative width"

After fixing the font problem, this is what I get when I try to start
ion3:

By the way, it seems like if these are known issues then the error
messages could be improved? Also, separately, I couldn't find mention
of the Helvetica issue in:

/usr/share/doc/ion3/faq.html
