There's something very much wrong with your system. Have you tried simply
deleting the locale files to work around it? (locate ion3.mo)
seems so (in retrospect): the problem went away yesterday after I did a
selfupdate of the package management system (DarwinPorts) for unrelated
reasons. I still have no idea how ion could be persuaded to use the
finnish settings despite correct locale settings. but anyhow: for the
time being I luckily can postpone learning finnish :-).
