xdm

I decided to not use either gnome and kde on an old laptop I'm setting 
up, and go with ion3 and xfce4 (I may change xfce4 to fluxbox).   
Anyway, I initially installed wdm, which listed both ion3 and xfce4 
(along with other related window managers), but, it failed to work when 
I tried it.  I then went with xdm, which only displays a prompt for 
username and password, after which it logs the user into xfce4.  Alas, 
only gdm works, and seems the only way to access ion3.  The problem with 
gdm is that it brings most of gnome with it when I install it (I use 
Debian Etch).  It's an unnecessarily huge install, I feel.

Does anyone have any tips on setting up either xdm or wdm?  Could you 
direct me to a faq entitled, "Exactly how Mark should set up xdm for 
Ion3 and xfce4 choices on his old laptop"?
