I think something like the Optimus Mini3 keyboard could be very handy. It has Linux drivers (including Perl bindings) and I've been meaning to write some code to integrate resource monitoring with it. The key is that it's separate from X, so it would work with a server and with a workstation the same way, you don't need even one monitor. Ted
