Adn the example in §12.1... *eugh*. Mod3 held, but mapped to group 
switch ==> don't let "XKB-aware" apps know that it is held. And 
apparently "XKB-aware" in this context means that Xlib is aware
of it, not that your program is. 

Fuck Xkb. It's not only the anti-configuration files that are shit.
All of it is.
