OK, thanks. I've tried copying the original cfg_ion.lua file from
/usr/local/etc again, and re-set the ALTMETA key (to "Mod4+"). But
unfortunately it still doesn't work.

An 'echo $HOME' put in my ~/.xinitrc (from where ion3 is started) shows
the variable to be set correctly.

Come to think of it, what's really strange is that it worked the first
time I've configured it, but - after a reboot - it didn't stick.
UPDATE: after further tests, I've discovered that it works
intermittently. I did a 'startx' and it worked. Then I quit X,
immediately 'startx' again and it didn't work. Then it worked again,
then it didn't for a couple of times, etc.
