I have tried your tricks put they doesn't seem to work ...

Ok .. I have done this but the font is not the same than used in xterm as default font.
The problem is mainly a problem of number of columns ...
With a 1024x798 screen definition, when I split vertically the "root" window, I can't run applications like "moc" or "make menuconfig" or others because the number of columns is not big enough with mlterm and a font of 13pt.
If I select a 12pt font in mlterm, the terminal is near unreadable and its ugly !
The best would to have exactly the same number of column and font than in xterm because in this case, all is perfectly readeable is the applications can be run.

Yep ! I tried this but nothing changes !
The application is badly displayed !
I have compiled xterm on gentoo 1.4 so the compilation date is after march 2003 ... So , according to the FAQ, I should not have this type of problems ;-)
I have notice that I meet a problem with mlterm too concerning the width ... : In large terms, the application is displayed with an half the size of the term.
I tried the same applications in KDE with Konsole , and all seemed to be ok in this case ...
Dou you know where I could find the patch of xterm ?
