It works !!!!
I have put in my .bashrc :
resize > /dev/null
and now all my xterm windows are properly displayed ... for mutt, moc, vi , ....
Thanks a lot for this trick Felix...
Tuomo ... may be could you add this trick to the FAQ ? (or may be its already written somewhere ?)

I am using the following workaround:
I put
resize > /dev/null
in my .bashrc. This resets the term-size correctly.
This approach only works well if
* you do not run other programms except your shell. I.e running
xterm -> bash -> man is fine, but
xterm -> man will start man with the wrong term size.
* if you start the shell not from an X term but from a proper linux
console, you will get an error message (the console will start
nontheless).
Does anyone know a bash command to check, whether the shell is running
in a graphical term or in a proper linux console?
