This is very interesting indeed!

Some additional thoughts:

* Network transparency. It would be interesting to be able to run an
  application remotely but have the code for UI realisation run
  locally.

* X independence. Since Vis doesn't depend on X, it would be easier to
  use it with an alternative windowing system.

Of course, both of these depend on support in the canvas capability
APIs as well.

You have described the API using Lua, but I assume that a real
implementation would have to be done as a C library?
