Small projects you said ?,
it's all relative :) and It depend on the given time...

But something I can suggest, is trying to make it work on new architectures
like aarch_64,
or more exotic ones like MIPS or PPC.

Or target your favorites MCU, I just ordered a new version of ESP8266 with
more memory..

Or just try to build it with other compilers, the 1st that come to my mind
is LLVM clang...

And also look at unsuported OS too

The benefit is double or triple, it could help to trap existing bugs and
improve code quality.
