As the Vietnamese have recently discovered, Tamiflu is not useful against the avian flu.
My wife is a nurse at our local hospital, and recently attended an in-service seminar given by their infection control specialist. He told the group that anti-viral drugs were expected to be ineffective against the bird flu, because they have been used as feed supplements in some chinese poultry mega-farms, thus all but ensuring that the surviving virus would be resistant to them. / Lars Poulsen *** The routine use of any anti-biotic or anti-virual drug as feed supplements should be treated as a crime against humanity, and stigmatized to the utmost - the penalty for a violation should be life in prison, with seizure of all assets for donation to medical research... in the case of a corporation, it should be dissolution, with the assets being auctioned off and the proceeds donated to medical research and charity. The individuals involved in this should be reviled and outcast. We KNOW this breeds "superbugs" - it is basic genetic science, there is no rational reason for anyone, anywhere, to be engaging in these practices. The predicted impact of an Asian Bird Flu pandemic in the US (alone) is staggering - it makes Osama, and even Dubya, look like pikers... and this is only the first among many possibilities.
