Ole is right: Apple moved its software buiness model to subscription
some years ago, without really saying as much. Every 12 to 18 or so
months there's a new version of OS X, QT, iLife apps et al. and the
price is relatively modest (compared to Microsoft anyway), with no
upgrade pricing (except for their high-end video apps which are more
traditionally priced, I think) . So newcomers get a deal (come on in,
Switchers), and long-time users get pricing that's similar to upgrade
prices for mainline apps like Office.
In the years after I left Apple, I noted that Apple's annual software
sales and profit were very similar numbers: if they sold $300
million in software, annual profit was around $300 mil. Shareholders
are probably happy that Apple is still able to command significant
high-margin software revenue: Mac users may be less happy about the
arrangement... especially when Apple offers the new version as a
'security patch.'

You didn't read the fine print:

If you already paid for QT 7, you're good to go, otherwise you need
to pay
the upgrade price. Nothing unusual here.
