Dave,
The most serious problem related to Skype is the proprietary nature
of its protocols -- reverse engineering efforts notwithstanding. In
the long run, proprietary VoIP undermines confidence in the security,
reliability, and privacy of its operations, particularly given our
escalating surveillance infrastructure.
VoIP is becoming a critically important technology, and users should
demand that only open protocols and/or open standards be used for
these systems.
Given Skype's proprietary and technologically aggressive approach,
efforts that shed light on the internal operations of Skype will
be viewed in many quarters as a positive development.
