I make out the check to AT&T, but I have to make out two checks. Why? Because the AT&T that sells me local and that used to do business as SNET and then SBC is *not* of one piece with the AT&T that sells me long distance. More interesting, if you have "AT&T" local service in that part of the country, you cannot get an AT&T calling card. You have to have AT&T long distance. And AT&T does not let you have calling card service anywhere unless you have their long distance service on a landline. I'm sure they enjoy soaking up the costs of billing all their customers 24 times a year instead of 12.
