In response to Bob Frankston:

Alas V6 is not the answer. I used to be a strong advocate of v6 and it
still has value but it doesn't address the more fundamental problem of
forcing the IP address to act as both the name and the path. It can't
-- so
we create the DNS as a stable database but then only lease the name
thus
making it even worse.

We tried to address both problems with the release of the Vista
operating system. The network stack supports IPv6, including the
"Teredo" interface that let PC obtain IPv6 connectivity through an
existing IPv4 NAT. It also include the possibility to publish stable
names using PNRP.

For example, my laptop publishes the name
p.p9c13df47c00d57e960917d4ae5d2db89bec1f44d.pnrp.net. Not very friendly,
but definitely stable. The long string of hex digits is the hash of a
public key, providing secure name resolution.

A combination of IPv6 and PNRP could easily enable the "home monitoring"
scenario described in this thread.
