Thanks. The missing piece was removing the ipfx package prior to
installing the new software. Since I only removed ipf, the 64 bit
pieces remained at the earlier version. Once both pieces were removed,
both were then installed for the new version.

You should be able to do "pkginfo ipf" and "pkginfo ipfx".
You need to pkgrm both before upgrading.
/usr/sbin/ipf should be a link to a different program that
runes either /usr/sbin/sparcv7/ipf or /usr/sbin/sparcv9/ipf.
