Bah, tainted kernels...who cares ?

Anyway, to counter what Jacob says, unless someone is downloading and
installing a linux kernel that doesn't come with the distribution,
kernel modules do need to be recompiled for each distro, seperately
because each one has its own set of patches that they use, etc.

It's a royal pain in the ass trying to provide a complete package for
a linux that includes a kernel module.

It is often a challenge just to build a linux kernel with the source
provided by a vendor (RedHat/SuSE) that matches the one you install.
They might give you the source/patches, but that doesn't make it any
easier and with the versioning crap in the LKM interface...ugh
