You could have simply restored your 3G backup to the 3GS. If you simply install the iOS by pressing the OPTION key while clicking 'Restore', iTunes asks you to restore from a certain backup. That's how I 'sync' my iPhones when I'm buying a new one (hopefully soon again :-))
