Hi Kathie,
It's pretty simple, really. You can do it from iTunes on your computer, AND 
from the "App Store" app on your iPhone.

From your iPhone, you need to be sure you're connected to a wifi network if you 
want to download "large" apps. If you're on 3G you can download apps, but there 
is a size limit.

From iTunes, assuming you have an Internet connection, simply click on iTunes 
Store in the side bar. Once there, use the top "nav bar" and go to the App 
Store. From there you can browse and search to your heart's content.

The iTunes app should already be on your phone, and you cannot delete it. But 
it doesn't have anything to do with downloading apps to your iPhone.
