Hi Suzanne, No question is too elementary.
You have to choose the entry, choose to edit it, and then scroll to the bottom of the entry for the delete button. I guess Apple assumes that deleting contacts is not a thing one does very often, at least not on their phone, and so don't provide a swipe to delete or "edit list" on the front list. Hope that helps.
