Hi Suzanne, I can't tell you if it's properly accessible, but the serial number is _supposed_ to be available in iTunes. With the iPhone selected from the sidebar on the left, and then "Summary" selected at the top of the main panel of iTunes, it's in the first box, following the "Name", "Capacity", and "Software Version" fields.
By the way - not that you're not welcome to ask them here - but I wonder if you'd get more informative responses to questions like this and your one about the right flick from a mailing list dedicated to VoiceOver on iOS rather than this more general group? There's one that seems to be well trafficked at like the one at http://groups.google.com/group/viphone I'm familiar with VoiceOver a little because I've worked with it as a developer. I suspect a lot of members of this list have never used VoiceOver at all though, so are unable to discuss it meaningfully. Jamie.
