At first we thought the issues might be that my friend was using CloudOn and
sending the Word Doc via CloudOn, but we then tested sending a Word doc
directly from his Dell to a couple of iPads via email.

Quicklook still didn't display the footnotes, and opening the doc In other
apps, such as iAnnotate, also stropped out the footnotes. iAnnotate showed a
progress bar "converting to PDF".

Anyway, it's pretty critical that when passing around Word docs that footnotes
are preserved. Is there away to do that on iPad?
