However, it's also worth noting that:
Some systems give you fast burst speeds for a short duration. Smallish 
downloads and web pages will be fast but big downloads will slow down. 

I've also heard it claimed that some companies try to improve their 
speedtest.net or similar results in ways that may or may not be sneaky. 

My iPad feels faster on LTE than on DSL at home. 

Finally, re: shared vs. dedicated: it all ends up going to a shared link 
eventually. The only question is whether that shared link is a fat enough pipe. 
A cable modem company with aggressive architecture could be better than a DSL 
provider with a small 'net connection.
