Yes they do. But, what you really need is the IMEI number for the phone. Perhaps Apple can look it up given your SN, or your carrier might have a record of it. I would call Apple and/or your carrier ASAP. They can put your phone on the blacklist so it can't be activated.
Is there any chance you have find my iPhone activated? You might be able to track it and report it to the police.
