I downloaded and tried Waze. Nice app, but the problem is that my old iPhone no 
longer has my SIM card in it, so no there’s data connection. It tracks where I 
am, but displays no map! It shows “Searching Network…”, drains the battery, and 
gets the phone pretty hot trying to find a network at full cell power.

I’ll proceed to try some of the others mentioned (Navigon, TomTom, ForeverMap). 
I don’t need the entire country mapped, just a few locales.
