In the application shown at the iPhone introduction and at WWDC there
is an application which browses the Apple on-line directory. It has a
text input element I want to use, or emulate.
I've uploaded a screenshot of it:

It has slightly rounded corners (no problem), grey prompting text (no
problem), and a blue right end that has an icon in it (how do you do
that?). Or is it two adjacent elements that look like one?
