Does Safari use CSS for this in some way?

I suspect they might (the web inspector uses CSS for instance, and my
guess is the new find effects in Safari 3 do too, plus the underline
looks suspiciously like a dotted border-bottom).

So, if the guess is right you need to work out what class name they
add to a dynamically created, then overide that with your own - though
they might use inline style - but dynamically added classes would be
easier imo
