Subject: Undocumented feature - there IS a japanese keyboard in the 1.1.1
update!

If you go to a page that is properly encoded for japanese, then you
get another keyboard (perhaps a beta version??).
Try this:
go to www.alc.co.jp and type any english word in the search box near
the top of the page. Then click the search button to the right of the
input field. On the resulting page, click again in the same box. Et
voila! New keyboard! Also, I tried this with goffice.com and it
worked fine as well. My question: what specific encoding causes the
iphone to recognize it needs a japanese keyboard and how could I
integrate this encoding into a future web app?
