native apps are developed only on a mac using the SDK and will be
distributed using the apple appstore. since the beta SDK is downloaded
as a .dmg file, you will most likely need a mac to view the enclosed
docs. you need to be an approved SDK member to get software onto an un-
jailbroken iPhone but can otherwise test in an emulator. an iPhone
with firmware < 2.0 will need to be upgraded if you want to install
apps.

web apps are developed on any platform using HTML/JS/CSS and are
accessed over the web using the iPhone browser, Safari. you can place
a glorified bookmark on the iphone home screen, assuming the iPhone in
question has 1.1.4 firmware. apple calls these web apps:
