first off , you probably should post your question in the iphonesdk google group, this one is for web development. And it sounds like you want to do native development.
You need a paid developer account from apple , but a free account will give you access to the developer site and samples. You can deploy on the simulator but not the device. 99.00 will give you an account that allows deployment. There are a couple good beginners books, look on amazon for beginning iphone sdk 3.0 development, this is a very simple book to follow. With at least one reference text, start by working through the examples in the book, look up the classes in the reference material on the dev site and with the xcode environment, the evironment will guide you a lot in choosing the correct class. Once you are confortable with xcode and the simpler examples in the reference, move on to running and trying to understand the apple samples, they are very good. Try modifying them to perform other functions. The idea is to get a good feel for the rather large class library and objective-c as a whole, this is one language that the more pratice the more you will understand it. Don't try to memorize classes or anything like that, just understand how to use the base classes along with the reference and xcode to find specific methods . After a while you should start to feel conforatable with the sdk and environment. It just takes time.
