you might be thinking of cell tower triangulation for a quasi GPS. the
geolocation on ipod when not using GPS is based soley on IP address and the
public records of that IP address. So for my home comcast, its scary that my
IP address shows up right at my house. Other areas in the US are that
accurate but in many parts of the world the best geolocation by IP address
will do is the city you are in.
