That i know, the only way to center an element is using javascript:
- getting the window innerheight
- setting a block with absolute positionning and fixed height
- set a top value to 1/2 of the window inner height and apply a top margin 
negatively equal to 1/2 of element fixed height
- tadaa !
I think you should googling around for that, there is for sure already a 
out-of-the-box solution for that!

With height = auto or %, i don't have even a clue. The last time i saw vertical 
alignment was in HTML4 using valign=center in TD tags…
