Here's an example using focus():
<form action="" method="" id="form" class="panel">
Your first name: <input name="fname" id="fname">
<br> <a class="whiteButton"
href="javascript:document.getElementById('fname').focus();">Start Typing</a>
</form>
document.getElementById('fname').focus() is the way to go.
