To me, the patch looked very reasonable (even without the explanation:), and
I was surprised not to find it in the current sources... I hope you forgive
me the indecent hint.

Well, if there is a Java client, then at least the proprietary stuff is 
somewhat encapsulated and not visible to the user. I guess we won't need 
that for a 400-node cluster :-) - but you never know what it might be good
for. We'll have a look at it, and if it's nice we'll use it for one of
the more important servers.
