There is a limit to the message length, IPMB messages are limited to 32 bytes and the linux KCS drive has a limit of 80 bytes. ipmitool does most FRU reads with 16 bytes to work with the the widest variety of hardware, but If you can determine the maximum size for any particular implementation it can result in better performance.
