I found that with with the default PE2950 BMC settings over a lanplus
connection, connecting to the admin user without -k gave me USER
privileges and didn't allow sol activate.  I was able to change the
settings via the OpenIPMI interface, but it was less trouble to get the
Kg key working than to have to reconfigure all the BMCs.  I also may
have missed something along the way; maybe it does actually work without
reconfiguration and my problem was due to something else.

In any case, the Dells allow one to set Kg keys that cannot currently be
passed on the ipmitool command line.  If the convenience of having an
ascii key outweighs the downside of not being able to communicate some
valid keys, I'll either change my keys to contain printable ascii
characters or re-investigate using lanplus without double-key
authentication.
